I have found the University of Surrey to be a friendly and comfortable place to study since the Guildford campus is smaller, and more welcoming than some other universities. During my time at Surrey, I have had the opportunity to make lots of friends and really feel part of the university community. The Department of Economics offers a rigorous Economics programme, covering a wide range of areas, including modules in Economic History, Econometrics, Macroeconomic and Microeconomic Theory and specialist areas including Finance.
My friends and I take advantage of the campus location, which is right on the doorstep of Guildford town, and offers a variety of places to meet up. With easy access to London, we often take the opportunity to go and see all that London has to offer.

I chose to study Economics because I wanted a career in the area of Economics. I have loved every minute of studying for my BSc Economics (Hons) at the University of Surrey – except for the exams and the inevitable wait for the exam results! The course has really been worth all the effort that I have put in, as it is the kind of degree where hard work really pays off.
The staff were approachable and I found it valuable to make regular use of the weekly office hours held by each member of the teaching staff within the Department of Economics. During this time I was able to ask questions and discuss ideas with the lecturers and tutors who were teaching the modules I was taking. I am very grateful to all the staff for their time - I could not have successfully achieved first class honours without them! They are great people and I have really enjoyed discussing ideas with them.
The University facilities are modern and well serviced. One great thing about the University of Surrey is the extended opening hours in the library and the computer labs. They are open 24/7 - just perfect for the times you realise at 6am on the morning of a coursework deadline that something needs to be changed!

The Department of Economics at the University of Surrey was a very good place for me to study for two main reasons. Firstly, Guildford is a very nice place to live, and the university campus is extremely attractive.
The other reason is that I really enjoyed the variety of modules that I was able to study as part of the BSc Economics (Hons) programme. In the first year, the basic tools that I would use throughout my studies, including Mathematics for Economists and Statistics, Macroeconomics and Microeconomics were covered and I was given the opportunity to ask lots of questions. The material covered in the second year, including Intermediate Macroeconomics and Intermediate Microeconomics, built on what I had learnt in the first year. And, in the final year, I had the chance to choose modules that were of specific interest to me from a variety of different areas including Financial Economics and Corporate Financial Policy.
Mr Naveed Ahmed (Bangladesh) – final year 2006/2007
To me Economics is the best of the social sciences! The blend of mathematics, theoretical literature, philosophy and other related studies makes it both engaging and challenging. Studying Economics at the University of Surrey has been an excellent choice for me as an international student. I have found the whole atmosphere extremely friendly. I have found my fellow students as well as all of the staff to be very helpful.
The course has been carefully designed so that I not only got taught the basic principles, but I also gained an in-depth knowledge right at the cutting edge of the discipline. I was able to choose modules from a variety of specialist areas that were of specific interest to me.
Faisal SHORA (Indian) - graduated with a first in June 2006
I have just finished a long, worthwhile journey at the University of Surrey. I enjoyed the range of modules from which I could choose my options during the third year of my BSc (Hons) degree in the Economics department. The range of modules offered many opportunities for me to follow my interests in a variety of subjects. Another highlight for me was my placement year at the Inland Revenue. During this year, I learnt a lot, not just about the workplace but about myself and more importantly about my potential.
The University of Surrey is an extremely pleasant place to study and provided me and my friends with a variety of activities to enjoy after classes were over. We had the opportunity to join a variety of clubs and societies that fitted with our sporting and other interests. We even had the opportunity to set up our own (Poker) club!
Jakub DEMSKI (Poland) on Placement at the Bank of England in 2006/2007
I joined the University of Surrey in September 2005 after completing my first year of economics at another university. I started at level 2 of the BSc (Hons) Economics degree and I do not regret my decision at all. The support staff was helpful and welcoming, while lecturers were extremely approachable and accommodating.
The degree course covers all the skills needed for a professional career in the areas related to economics. Not only is the programme relevant to my future career but each module remains stimulating and interesting. The structure of the course enabled me to build on my understanding of all aspects of economics. I enjoyed working in groups and teams just like those that I am likely to encounter in the workplace.
